I
recently returned from a “girls week-end” this summer
with 5 of my best girls. We flew from O’Hare to Kansas
City. Mo and picked up a rental vehicle. From there we
drove 40 minutes to a small town in Kansas called
Atchison. Those of you who watch the travel channel are
probably familiar with Atchison. It has the distinction
of being “the most haunted town in Kansas”. We were
there during the massive heat wave and I believe it was
simply too hot for any spirit like activity. It’s
possible we just couldn’t hear anything because of all
the air conditioning and fans going everywhere.
While
in Atchison, we stayed at the Tuck – U – Inn at Glick
Mansion. This fabulous bed and breakfast is nestled in
Historic Atchison. Innkeepers Chris and Loman delight in
sharing this wonderful mansion with you.
Unique,
cozy areas in the home provided us a place to sip
raspberry ice tea and catch up with each other.
There
are five beautifully appointed rooms, each with their
own bathroom.
We had
the ultimate pajama party by booking Lizzy’s Attic,
which sleeps up to six comfortably.
Breakfast was in the dining room (the sunroom was too
hot at that time) and was truly scrumptious.
There
are plenty of things to see and do in Atchison for a
long week-end. Downtown Atchison offers unique shopping
with small town charm. Amelia Earhart was born in
Atchison and her birthplace is now a museum. The
Benedictine College is there and said to be very
haunted, at least according to reports on the Travel
Channel. Atchison boasts one the most impressive
collections of Victorian architecture in the Midwest. We
toured several of these beautiful homes. The best way to
see Atchison and learn about its rich history is with a
narrated tour aboard the Atchison Trolley.
At the
end of our stay, we all decided we would come back one
day. Then we took it one step further and booked Lizzy’s
Attic for Halloween 2007. The inn is already booked up
for 2006. Atchison goes all out during the month of
October. You can take a “Haunted Atchison” Trolley Tour
and there are haunted train rides and ghosts and goblins
on parade.
